Patchouli

Patchouli
(Progestemon Cablin Benth)

Patchouli

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth; also patchouly or pachouli) is a species of plant from the genus Pogostemon. It is a bushy herb of the mint family, with erect stems, reaching two or three feet (about 0.75 metre) in height and bearing small, pale pink-white flowers. The plant is native to tropical regions of Asia, and is now extensively cultivated in China, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam, as well as West Africa.

The heavy and strong scent of patchouli has been used for centuries in perfumes, and more recently in incense, insect repellents, and alternative medicines. The word derives from the Tamil patchai (Tamil: பச்சை) (green), ellai (Tamil: இலை) (leaf).[1] In Assamese it is known as xukloti.

Cultivation
Patchouli grows well in warm to tropical climates. It thrives in hot weather, but not direct sunlight. If the plant withers due to lack of water, it will recover well and quickly after rain, or watering. The seed-producing flowers are very fragrant and bloom in late fall. The tiny seeds may be harvested for planting, but they are very delicate and easily crushed. Cuttings from the mother plant can also be rooted in water to produce additional plants.

Extraction of essential oil
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) essential oil in a clear glass vial

Extraction of patchouli's essential oil is by steam distillation of the leaves, requiring rupture of its cell walls by steam scalding, light fermentation, or drying.

Leaves may be harvested several times a year, and when dried may be exported for distillation. Some sources claim a highest quality oil is usually produced from fresh leaves distilled close to where they are harvested; others that baling the dried leaves and fermenting them for a period of time is best.

Patchouli essential oils classified under the main component is patchoulol . The leaves and flowers contain patchouli oil , but people usually get patchouli oil from steam distillation of the dried leaves ( as in oil of cloves ) . In Indonesian patchouli oil is also distilled from a close relative of the original Indonesian patchouli , Java patchouli ( Pogostemon heyneani ) , which has a lower quality .

Patchouli oil has a generally good PA levels above 30 % , clear yellow , and has a distinctive fragrance and difficult to remove . This kind of patchouli oil obtained by steam distillation technique using dry steam generated producing machine ( boiler ) that is passed into the reaction tank ( autoclave ) the steam will penetrate further patchouli dry feedstock and steam generated is forwarded to the separation for the separation of water vapor with patchouli oil steam distillation system . Good patchouli oil produced from the reaction tube and distilling equipment made of stainless steel ( stainless steel ) and the equipment used to distill only patchouli alone ( not to be alternated with other raw materials ) .

Due to the nature of the strong aroma , this oil is widely used in the perfume industry . One-third of the world wear perfume oil products , including more than half of perfumes for men . This oil is also used as a fragrance tissue paper , a mixture of laundry detergent clothes , and air freshener . More traditional function is as a main ingredient incense and insect repellent clothing .

The aroma of patchouli oil is considered a 'luxury ' as perceived by Europeans , but everyone agreed that the aroma is soothing
